Privacy Policy
Random Walk doesn't collect your data. Here is exactly what the app does with it.
The short version
- No account, no ads, no analytics, no tracking, and no third-party SDKs.
- Your walks and your journal stay on your device. We never receive them.
- Your location is used to plan loops with Apple Maps and to follow your walk.
- If you choose to, past walks can be read from Apple Health or GPX files. They stay on your device too.
Location
Random Walk asks for location access “While Using the App”. It uses your location to:
- plan a loop that starts and ends where you are, using Apple Maps (MapKit) walking directions and place search. To do this, your starting point and the loop's waypoints are sent to Apple's servers, which handle them under Apple's privacy policy;
- follow the loop during a walk, including with the screen locked. Location is only tracked in the background while a walk is running, and iOS shows the location indicator while it is;
- name the neighbourhood you walk in most (for example “Around Prenzlauer Berg”). To do this, one point in that area is sent to Apple's geocoding service, which returns the place name.
The developer never receives your location. It isn't stored on any server.
Your journal
Finished walks (the route you walked, distance, time, date and the areas you've explored) are stored only on your device, in the app's local database. The Home Screen widget and Live Activity read them from the same device. Walks you import from Apple Health or GPX files are stored the same way, only on your device. You can delete a walk by swiping it in the Journal, and remove all imported walks in Settings → Delete imported walks. Deleting the app deletes everything.
Apple Health (optional)
Random Walk uses Apple Health in two optional ways, each only after you allow it:
- Saving walks. If you turn on “Save walks to Health” in Settings, finished walks are written to the Health app as outdoor walking workouts, with their distance and the route you walked.
- Importing past walks. If you tap “Add my past walks” or “Import from Health”, Random Walk reads your walking, hiking and running workouts and their routes, and adds those routes to your map of explored streets on your device. It reads nothing else from Health. iOS lets you choose which data to share and how far back.
Health data is never used for advertising, never shared, and never leaves your device through Random Walk. You can revoke access at any time in Settings → Health → Data Access & Devices.
GPX files (optional)
You can import GPX files you pick in the Files app, for example walks exported from another app or a GPS device. Random Walk reads the tracks in those files and stores them on your device only. The files are never uploaded anywhere.
Children
Random Walk collects no personal information from anyone, including children.
